What is lupus?

The Lupus is a long-term autoimmune disease in which the body's immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal healthy tissue. Symptoms include inflammation, swelling, and damage to the joints, skin, reins, blood, heart, and lungs.

There are about 1.5 million Americans currently living with lupus, including celebrities, and about one in 250 people could eventually develop it at some point in their life. Lupus is a predominantly female disease: 90% of lupus patients are women and a major subset are women of color. This increased sensitivity may be made possible, at least in part, due to differences in hormones and sex chromosomes. That is, the levels of estrogen increase, so it is more common in women during their childbearing years.

Although medically speaking no cure has been found, many foundations for lupus have been able to make available drugs that can be used to relieve the symptoms of this disease but not without side effects.

However, the good news is that nature itself has given us everything we need to live healthy lives and fight this chronic disease. For this reason, our experts at   My Herbs have discovered the best herbal medicine to help destroy this disease once and for all without side effects.

What are steroids?

Steroids are very anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs, used in many diseases - in rheumatology, dermatology, pulmonology,  allergologytransplantology, oncology and gastrology. They are derivatives of natural hormones secreted by the adrenal cortex. For the first time, the adrenal cortical hormone was administered to a patient with rheumatoid arthritis  (RA) in 1948, achieving dramatic improvement, unfortunately in the short term. Steroids are drugs widely used in rheumatology, and in many diseases, despite advances in medicine, they remain basic drugs, for example in polymyalgia rheumatica or polymyositis.

1. The effect of steroids on lupus

The steroids used in lupus reduce the severity of symptoms - they inhibit inflammation in the joints, and therefore, relieve pain, reduce skin and mucous symptoms, inhibit inflammation of the pericardium  (the serous membrane surrounding the heart) and the pleura (the serous membrane surrounding the lungs), causes withdrawal of inflammatory fluid from the pleura and pericardium. They reduce the severity of inflammation in the kidneys and thus minimize their damage. They allow you to reduce the symptoms of the central nervous system. Thanks to this multi-organ effect, steroids used alone or in combination with other drugs allow the patient to go into remission, that is, to calm the symptoms.

2. Use of glucocorticosteroids in lupus

Glucocorticoids (steroids) are used in lupus in very aggressive and potentially fatal forms. In the aggressive course of the disease, steroids are used in immunosuppressive doses orally of 1 mg/kg of body weight or intravenously in very high doses above 500 mg by drip infusion for 3 consecutive days. Once improvement is achieved, the dose is gradually reduced, reaching the easiest to maintain remission. Doses of up to 15 mg/day usually control mild symptoms of the disease - skin lesions, joint symptoms - are often used in combination with chloroquine or methotrexate. Low doses of prednisone 7.5 mg/day or less are usually sufficient for the treatment of maintenance of remission. In lupus, steroids are used in tablet form, for intravenous, intra-articular and periarticular infusions, as well as externally on the skin in the form of ointments and creams.

3. When to take steroids?

Steroids should be taken in the morning according to the circadian rhythm of the secretion of cortisol - the natural hormone of the adrenal cortex. Steroids, in many cases necessary, however, are drugs that carry the risk of many side effects. You must know them. They can cause:  diabetes, high cholesterol, increased blood pressure, muscle weakness (post-steroid myopathy), thinning of the skin prone to strokes, eye changes - cataracts, and glaucoma - it is important to recognize these as soon as possible. Patients treated with steroids may be more prone to infection, on the other hand, steroids may mask their symptoms.

If you are suffering from this condition and do not want to undergo any medical treatment, you have come to the right place.

As a patient with lupus, the type of food you eat can determine the quality of your life.

Even if there is no specific diet, people with lupus should always ask nutritionists what are the diets and foods that can be eaten. The reason is that eating the wrong food can actually make the disease or inflammation worse, and that's what should be avoided. So ask a nutritionist directlyNo need to wait long, all questions can be the solution.
