Preventing cancer means giving yourself the best possible chance of limiting your personal risk of getting cancer. You cannot control all the factors that can cause cancer - there is no such thing as "zero risks" even with a lifestyle that meets all the recommendations - but you can act on some of them while protecting your health daily.

The four main risk factors for cancer are, in order, tobacco, alcohol, an unbalanced diet, and a lack of physical activity.

Tobacco is at the top of all cancer risk factors and is the leading cause of preventable death: the annual number of tobacco-related deaths in France is estimated at 78,000, including 47,000 deaths from cancer.

Stopping smoking is always beneficial for health, regardless of the amount consumed and the duration of consumption. The earlier you stop, the faster you decrease your risk of cancer, especially lung cancer.

Any physical activity (climbing stairs, walking, cycling, swimming…) for at least 30 minutes a day helps to keep in shape and reduce the risk of several cancers.


For any outdoor activity (leisure, sports or professional), you should adopt the right reflexes:

- seek shade;
- go out covered: clothes, hat, glasses;
