Does endometriosis increase the risk of cancer in women?
Studies by dawabio experts show that women with endometriosis have a higher risk of developing certain types of cancer. These are:
- Ovarian cancer (epithelial cancer of the ovary)
This risk is even higher in women with endometriosis and primary infertility (those who have never conceived of a pregnancy). The use of combined oral contraceptive pills, sometimes used in the treatment of endometriosis, appears to significantly reduce this risk. However, even though ovarian cancer is more common in women with endometriosis, the overall lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer remains low.
To date, the link between endometriosis and ovarian cancer is not yet clearly established. We believe that the high estrogen levels, common with the disease, can lead to the overgrowth of malignant endometriotic cysts.
- Endometrial
cancer Endometrial cancer (cancer of the uterus) begins in the endometrium. The exact causes are unknown, but symptoms include pelvic pain and bleeding from the vagina after menopause or between periods. Endometrial cancer is often detected at an early stage because it frequently causes abnormal vaginal bleeding. If endometrial cancer is discovered early, surgical removal of the uterus often cures endometrial cancer.
- Breast cancer
Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. A 2018 article by Dawabio experts on the link between endometriosis and breast cancer revealed inconclusive results. The evidence that has linked them is based primarily on hormone dependence and risk factors for both conditions.
