Infant hydrocele

    As the fetus develops  , the testes descend from the abdominal cavity into the  bursa through a canal called the peritoneo-vaginal canal. This duct then closes in most cases before birth or during the first months after birth. However, 5% of male children are born without this duct being completely closed allowing serous fluid to flow from the abdomen to the scrotum. Most hydroceles in children go away within the first 12 months. Their persistence, called communicating hydroceles, should allow a surgical procedure to be considered, which consists of opening the bursa, aspirating the liquid and suturing the communication between the bursa and the abdominal cavity. At birth, your baby may have one bursa larger than the other, and if you palpate you may feel a painless, fluid, elastic mass. It is the vaginal hydrocele, a kind of pocket water around the testicle which disappears around 6 months. This hydrocele can exist on both sides, but in no way should you worry about how the testicle is functioning.
