TV commercials often feature toothpaste or other products that can help us fight  bad breath

The truth is, in order to get rid of bad breath, we don't have to spend a lot of money on products that don't always contain natural ingredients.

Halitosis - bad breath

Halitosis is the medical name for bad smell in the mouth, which is more common than expected. It happens to most people, at least at some point in their lives. Bad breath can occur for a variety of reasons. Most often, however, it results from a lack of oral hygiene, which contributes to the growth of odor-causing bacteria.

Bad breath is also associated with a lack of saliva and a feeling of dry mouth. The salivary glands are responsible for secreting this fluid, which is 99% water and has antiseptic properties. It also keeps the mouth clean.

Halitosis is a very unpleasant disease,  both for the patient and for everyone around him. Often times, patients are ashamed to talk to other people because they feel dirty or guilty about their unpleasant illness.

Eating certain foods, such as coffee, alcohol, garlic, and onions, and smoking cigarettes increases the release of unpleasant odors from the mouth. There are also medications that reduce salivation and dry mouth, which are synonymous with bad breath, as side effects.

Another cause of bad breath can be a low-carb diet. These nutrients can be found in pasta, bread, rice, and legumes, they provide the body with fat, which is needed to generate the energy our body needs.

However, the most common and important cause of bad breath is the spread of bacteria in the mouth. If present in excess, they cause plaque formation which produces acids and volatile compounds causing the odor.

Dentures, cavities, poor quality fillings and crowns, sinusitis, infections or mouth ulcers, diabetes, indigestion, and stress are other factors in the development of bad breath.
